Favoured by Gorillaz producer Curtis Lynch Jr, pop remixer DJ Dobie, Primus drummer Brain, DMC World DJ Champion A-Trak, MJ producer Teddy Riley, and more – Battery 3 from Native Instruments is the Pro standard in beatmaking, looping, and drum sampling.
Controlled by General MIDI, the Battery interface shows 50% sample cells and 50% edit options. There are over 2500 samples within the library, which are all assigned a cell in the Battery window. Up to 8 rows with between 4 and 16 sample cells per row ensure your drum kit is presented in the most economic and practical manner, and a simple right-click brings up the “context”, from which you can choose complimentary samples for your own custom kits.
However, if you’re more of a plug-n-play type, a team of professional sample developers, sound designers, and artists have meticulously crafted over 100 drum kits exclusively for the Battery 3 library, giving you access to some professional sounds at the touch of a button.
In addition to the core sounds, NI provide vintage sampling modes (recreating classic hardware samplers), and a host of effects. MIDI echo and humanising features give a more natural feel to your loops, while performance articulations including roll, flam, and buzz give a range of sounds. Cell-specific timestretch then allows you to augment the sounds to your liking. Compression, Limiting, EQ, delay, modulation, and reverb setting provide the last line of editing options before the sounds hit your mix – all of which makes for a comprehensive solution to the daunting task of producing drums.
